Tummy Tuck

Pregnancy, significant weight loss, and even genetics can stand in the way of the firmly toned abdomen you’ve always wanted. Targeting excess fat, skin, and laxity of the abdomen, a tummy tuck can greatly enhance your natural shape to give you a firmer, flatter, and more contoured mid section. Dr. Lefkowitz will develop a custom tailored approach to help you achieve a firmer, flatter, and tighter abdomen.

About the Procedure

A tummy tuck is performed using a horizontal incision in the lower abdomen at the bikini line. For most patients, the incision is placed just above the pubic area and within the hipbones, and most bikinis, thongs, and even low-rise jeans easily cover it. C-section scars are often removed as part of the procedure.

The abdominal muscles (and fascia covering the muscles) are tightened along the entire length of the abdomen. This helps repair stretched muscles after pregnancy, weight loss, or genetics. Excess skin is then trimmed away and the belly button is re-inset with small sutures.

Although less commonly performed, some patients are candidates for a “mini-abdominoplasty” in which the tummy tuck procedure is done thru a smaller horizontal incision and the muscle/fascia is tightened below the belly button only (instead of the entire length of the abdomen). Typically, patients who are good candidates for this procedure have very mild abdominal laxity and only minimal skin excess.

Regardless of the technique utilized, a tummy tuck is usually performed in an outpatient setting. Typically, the surgery takes about two to four hours to perform, however Dr. Lefkowitz is committed to spending as much time as needed to achieve the most balanced and beautiful results.

Your Results

Your final shape and contour will gradually appear within three to six months after your surgery.  Say goodbye to excess skin and enjoy a flatter, more toned abdomen.

Complementary Procedures

Dr. Lefkowitz may also use liposuction to improve the abdominal contour. This is called a Lipo-abdominoplasty and has become an extremely common technique to further improve the contour of the entire mid-section.

Tummy tucks are also frequently performed as part of the Mommy Makeover total body package.

Following your tummy tuck, you will feel mildly swollen and tight in your mid-section. Typically, one small drain tube will be implanted to evacuate fluid. This will be removed approximately 10 days after your procedure.

Dr. Lefkowitz recommends two weeks for recovery, however some patients are able to return to work within seven to 10 days after surgery (provided there is no heavy lifting involved.) Usually, all sutures used are absorbable and thus there are none to take out in the post-operative period. Light aerobic activity (elliptical, recumbent bike) can be resumed in 2-4 weeks with increasing activity over the next month.

Dr. Lefkowitz believes continuing care is essential. He will continue to guide you through all matters of the recovery process and will answer any of your questions regarding diet, exercise and activity levels.
